Portrait 39 is part of the ongoing series ‘Artist Portraits’ by Visual and 3D artist Roberto Voorbij. It’s a limited edition giclée print featuring Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The series of collages was originally commissioned by ARTISTS NOT ARMIES. All portraits of the series follow the same concept; an artist portrait in which the face of the artist is replaced by one of their most significant artworks. “The flowers in the face repeat themselves in the motif on the clothing, the pattern in the background, the diadem in Kahlo’s hair. The portrayed thus dissolving in a larger whole. The chosen central flower is that of the pear cactus, a symbol for transiency and vulnerability. The temporality of life? Or does the still life depict Frida Kahlo’s unstable marriage with the artist Diego Rivera? Whose favorite color returns in the form of the depicted calla lily”. Roberto Voorbij
